Abstract
In the last few years, the market for sweeteners has grown tremendously. Aspartame is a common artificial sweetener that is thought to be dangerous. On the other hand, stevioside is a plant that includes sugar and was assumed to be a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners. Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine whether aspartame or stevioside affected biochemical,sero-biochemical, and immunohistochemical changes in adult rats following six weeks. Material and Methods: Forty-eight rats were used and divided into three groups: Group I: the control group, Group II: rats received aspartame (75 mg/kgday), Group III:rats received stevia (45 mg/kgday). All medications were given orally for 6 weeks. Lipid Peroxidation product (MDA); liver glutathione (GSH); Liver Superoxidase dismutase activity(SOD); catalase (CAT), Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ; very low lipoprotein (VLDL) ;the cholesterol in the HDL;Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST); Creatinine, Urea, Total proteins were performed on blood and tissue specimens. Results: Aspartame group showed an increase in levels than the control group and stevioside-treated showed a decrease in levels than the control group aspartame had more harmful effects than stevia. Conclusion: Stevioside was less harmful than aspartame.
