Abstract
The metabolic disorder; Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the major origin of diabetic neuropathy (DN), which effects on the quality of life. Thus, we investigated the impact of diabetes mellitus on the sciatic nerve and spinal cord histology in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Twenty adult females Wistar rats were housed under standard condition, and then they divided into two groups; control and diabetic groups (10 rats each). Histological investigation of the sciatic nerve and spinal cord was performed by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Also, immunohistochemical staining with S100 and GFAP were used. The histological and ultrastructural analysis of spinal cord and sciatic nerve revealed sever changes of diabetic group in comparison to control one. Moreover, a significant decrease in the immunostaining expression of S100 and GFAP in spinal cord of diabetic rats. The decline of the staining affinity was observed in S100 stain of sciatic nerve of diabetic rats.
